Red Wings lose on road in the Sault

Thunderbirds pick up fifth win at home

Sault Ste. Marie's John Rhodes Community Centre was the venue Friday night as the hometown Soo Thunderbirds anchored a 4-1 home win against the Elliot Red Wings in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action.

The Thunderbirds got on the board with two power play markers in the opening period, one by Kaden Dundas at 13:52 and the second off the stick of Tyson Doucette at 16:36.

Kaden Laverdiere got the Red Wings on the board in the second period with a power play marker 49 seconds into the frame.

That turned out to be the only Elliot Lake scoring in the game.

Youssef Chaouachi then added a pair of goals for the Thunderbirds, the first shorthanded at 12:17 and a second, at 17:30, to make it 4-1 Thunderbirds through two periods.

Thunderbirds goalie Noah Metivier was the winner, stopping 22 shots.

Cameron Smith took the loss in goal for the Red Wings, making 38 saves.

Chaouachi had two goals and an assist for the Thunderbirds while Andrew Gibson and Cooper Foster added two assists each.

Also Friday night, the Powassan Voodoos hammered the French River Rapids 6-2, the Timmins Rock blasted the Cochrane Crunch 8-2 and the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners lost 5-3 to the Hearst Lumberjacks.

For the Red Wings, the next outing will be Thursday night when they face the Greater Sudbury Cubs at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex in Sudbury. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m.
