Red Wings lose at home to Lumberjacks in high scoring game

The Red Wings came home to an adoring crowd in Centennial Arena Saturday night to face the Hearst Lumberjacks. 

Six days earlier, Elliot Lake travelled to Hearst where the Lumberjacks turned out spoilers in what ended as a four point weekend road trip for Elliot Lake.

The Lumberjacks, in first place in the NOJHL east, trounced Red Wings 5-2 last Sunday afternoon.

Fast foward to Saturday night during the Red Wings first home game of the renewed season.

Elliot Lake goalie Colton Donaldson carried an 0.887 saves percentage into the game.

His counterpart in the Hearst net, Matteo Gennaro, had a 0.903 saves percentage

The Saturday scoring started when Lumberjacks sharpshooter William Neeld got by Donaldson at 5:42 of the first period.

He was followed by Raphael Lajeunesse three minutes later, at 8:53.

Both were assisted by Zachary Demers and Robbie Rutledge.

At 12:08, Hearst forward Mason Bazaluk got on the scoreboard with the Lumberjacks' third goal, on a power play.

Red Wings forward Jovani Moses put one past Gennaro in the Lumberjacks crease at 12:44, getting Elliot Lake on the scoreboard.

Moses was assisted by Silas Crawford and Kjell Osborne.

With their 3-1 first period lead intact, Lumberjacks again scored first in the second, as forward Tyren Grimsdale came through with their fourth goal at 6:39.

Dylan Ford made it 5-1,

Lumberjacks, on the power play, after Elliot Lake's Sam Noad took a holding penalty. The goal was scored at 17:04.

In the final stanza, Lumberjacks scored off the stick of their star forward Robbie Rutledge at 10:37. 

His goal followed a penalty  served by Red Wings forward Jovani Moses for too many players.

Matteo Gennaro took the win, stopping 22 of the 23 Elliot Lake shots he faced.

The loss fell to Elliot Lake's Colton Donaldson. He was good for stopping 21 of the 27 shots that came his way.

Hearst's season record is 25-7-3-0 and the Red Wings are 9-25-1-0.

Other Saturday play saw Soo Thunderbirds drop French River Rapids 7-4.

Kirkland Lake Gold Miners lost 5-4 to GSC in Sudbury

Next up for the Red Wings a matinee game at home Feb. 19 against Kirkland Lake Gold Miners.
