Red Wings grab first win of season at home

The Red Wings opened up a 6-2 lead through 20 minutes en route to the win

After losing to Blind River at home and the Soo Thunderbirds on the road in their opening two games, the Elliot Lake Red Wings notched their first win in the cozy confines of Centennial Arena on Tuesday night.

The Red Wings scored six goals in the first period in an 8-4 Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League win over the Soo Thunderbirds.

Red Wings forward Alex Antoine scored his first goal of the season to put the home team on the scoreboard at 10:12 of the first period.

Next up, Red Wings forward Josh Tomasi made the score 2-0, beating Soo netminder Zachary Reddy at 11:03.

Cameron Smith was between the pipes for the Red Wings as Thunderbirds captain Brock Santa Maria beat him at 11:52.

Less than a minute later, the Red Wings put another one past Reddy as Matthew Shulist scored at 12:42.

Darcy Scott added another marker at 14:16 to push the score to 4-1 Elliot Lake.

Evan Dantas notched another one for the home team a short time later at 15:08.

The final Soo goal of the first period came from Thunderbirds forward Youssef Chaouachi who cut the Elliot Lake lead to 5-2 at 16:59.

Then Kevin Laverdiere put another puck into the Thunderbirds' goal boosting the score to 6-2 Red Wings at 17:47.

In the second period, Elliot Lake's Zachary Vickerman was first to score at 6:45.

Silas Crawford was back to round out the Red Wings scoring with his first goal of the season at 8:19 Elliot Lake was shorthanded.

The Thunderbirds scored a pair of goals in the third to make the game closer.

Michael Chaffay scored at 7:04 while Dharan Cap rounded out the Sault scoring with a power play goal at 15:02.

Smith took the win while Reddy was tagged with the loss and left the game after one period for the Thunderbirds with Kolton Bourret finishing off the game in goal.

Next up for the Red Wings is a road game against Soo Eagles on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Pullar Stadium in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
