Red Wings give up 5 unanswered goals in home loss

The Elliot Lake Red Wings dropped their fourth game of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League season on Saturday night.

After opening the scoring, the Red Wings surrendered five unanswered goals in a 5-1 loss to the Powassan Voodoos at Centennial Arena.

Silas Crawford got the scoring started for the Wings at 11:33 of the first period, redirecting a shot from Devin Shoreman past Powassan goaltender Kannon Flageolle.

It was all Voodoos for the rest of the as Liam Serviss scored on a penalty shot, beating Red Wings netminder Sean Guerin at 15:59 of the opening period to get the visitors on the board.

Tyson Rismond gave Powassan the lead with his first goal of the season at 18:16.

At 10:16 of the second period, the Voodoos extended the lead thanks to a power play goal from Tucker Shields.

Kaedyn Long made it 4-1 at 16:15 of the second period and then capped off the scoring with his second of the night at 6:21 of the third period.

Flageolle took the win between the pipes for the Voodoos, stopping 22 shots while Guerin absorbed the loss for the Red Wings, making 29 saves.

Elsewhere in the NOJHL on Saturday, the Soo (Mich.) Eagles had a 1-0 lead over the French River Rapids when play was suspended due to fog on the ice midway through the first period at Pullar Stadium in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

The Blind River Beavers handed the Timmins Rock a 4-1 loss and the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners beat the Cochrane Crunch 4-3 in overtime.

Next up for the Red Wings, now 1-4-0-0 on the young season, is a game against the Gold Miners in Kirkland Lake next Friday night.
