Red Wings double up Gold Miners on road

The Elliot Lake Red Wings made the journey to Kirkland Lake Friday night in search of their second win of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League. 

When it was over, the Red Wings scored a 6-3 win over the hometown Gold Miners.

The Wings started strong as forward Alex Antoine scored first at 5:25 to get the visitors on the board.

Brodie Kearns extended the lead for Elliot Lake when he got one past Braydon Garnhart in the Gold Miners net at 13:27 of the first period.

Just 59 seconds later, Evan Dantas scored his second goal of the year to make it 3-0 Elliot Lake.

Nikolas Joniec got the Gold Miners on the scoresheet at 15:38 popping one in on a power play against Red Wings goaltender Cameron Smith.

Kirkland Lake cut the lead to one as Matthew Hill made it 3-2 at 17:07.

The Gold Miners pulled even at 8:49 of the second when Alex McDonald scored on Smith again.

The Red Wings retook the lead at 16:51 thanks to a goal by Devin Shoreman, his first of the season. 

Antoine then scored his second goal of the night on the power play in the final minute of the second period..

Zachary Vickerman capped off the scoring with a power play goal for Elliot Lake at 12:05 of the third period.

Antoine finished the night with two goals and three assists while Vickerman had a goal and two helpers for Elliot Lake.

Smith took the victory in goal for the Red Wings, making 30 saves on 33 shots on goal.

Garnhart absorbed the loss, stopping 39 of the 45 shots he faced.

Other play on a busy Friday night in the NOJHL saw the Hearst Lumberjacks drop the Soo Thunderbirds 7-3.

The Blind River Beavers were winners in Timmins against the Rock by a 2-1 score.

The Powassan Voodoos beat the Espanola Paper Kings 3-2.

In Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., the Soo Eagles defeated the Greater Sudbury Cubs 3-1.
