The 2nd Annual Purolator Tackle Hunger campaign is considered “a great success” after collecting three tons of food products with an estimated value of $16,000 that was delivered to the Elliot Lake Food Bank, said its president Len Kutchaw of the 6,800 lbs. of food collected.

“In spite of the rise in the cost of living, the community generosity of Elliot Laker’s is amazing,” he added.

Purolator staff and drivers delivered about 1,500 bags to homes in Elliot Lake and area a week before the bags were picked up on Saturday. Residents were asked to fill the bags with non-perishable food items. They were assisted by a team of volunteers who sorted the goods at the food bank.

Kutchaw said residents who did not have their bags picked up can deliver them to the food bank in the upper plaza.

“There was some confusion as to when the bags were to be put out on porches. If your bag was not picked up, you can drop it off at the Food Bank on Monday, Wednesday or Friday, or at the Fire Hall on any day,” he said. “To All the residents who gave so generously, we extend our sincerest Thanks. God bless you. Appreciate your support.”

It was a bittersweet day. Unfortunately, the person who initiated this tremendous fundraiser passed away in September.

Bruce Panagapko, started this event by simply asking a Purolator driver if the Purolator Tackle Hunger Program ever donated to the Elliot Lake Emergency Food Bank. This simple question has started what the food bank hopes will become an annual event.

“I want to acknowledge the terrific support from Purolator and the team of Purolator employees, their support for our community is deeply appreciated,” Kutchaw said.
