Record number 939 new COVID cases confirmed in Ontario today

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 939 new cases of COVID-19 in the province today. 

Yesterday the province's public health agency reported nearly 800 cases, which was the highest ever reported in a single day until today. 

There are five more deaths confirmed by the province including four people over the age of 80 years old and one person between 60 and 79 years old. 

Fifty-five per cent of the 939 cases reported today are individuals under the age of 40. 

Included in today's report are 339 cases from Toronto, 150 from Peel and 126 from Ottawa. 

There have been 33 more people hospitalized since yesterday's report, and nine patients have been admitted to intensive care units. 

The province reported 44,914 tests processed since yesterday's report. Public Health Ontario has stated the per cent positivity was at 2.1 per cent based on data collected on Oct. 7, meaning 2.1 per cent of the individuals tested for COVID-19 were positive on Oct. 7. Last week the per cent positivity rate was around 1.2 per cent. 

There are 56 new school-related cases being reported today, including 32 identified as student cases. There have been 876 school-related cases reported since the beginning of September, and they are spread across 429 schools in Ontario. There are now four schools closed due to COVID-19. 

Since January, the province has reported 57,681 lab-confirmed COVID cases and has recorded 49,032 cases as resolved or recovered, and 2,997 cases that have ended in death. 

There are 5,652 active, lab-confirmed cases in Ontario, including 225 people who are hospitalized with COVID-19. There are 47 COVID patients in intensive care units and 29 patients on ventilators. In mid-April, the province reported about 5,300 active cases and 858 hospitalizations. 

The breakdown for the Northern Ontario health units is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 37 cases, rate of 32.3 per 100,000 population. There are three known active cases. 
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 39 cases, rate of 30.1 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 41 cases. There is one known active case. 
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 85, rate of 101.9 per 100,000 population. There are no known active cases in the region. 
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 110 cases, rate of 55.3 per 100,000 population. There are four known active cases. 
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 19 cases, rate of 58.1 per 100,000. The health unit has reported 17 cases. There are no known active cases. 
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 67 cases, rate of 76.4 per 100,000. There are 13 known active cases.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 107 cases, rate of 71.4 per 100,000. There are no known active cases. 

The Ontario rate of infection is 388.
