A three-goal third period lifted the Soo Thunderbirds to a victory on Saturday night.

The Thunderbirds got a pair of goals from Dharan Cap in the final 20 minutes in a 4-2 Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League victory over the Elliot Lake Red Wings at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

The goals erased a 2-1 Elliot Lake lead after the Red Wings scored twice in the middle frame to take a 2-1 lead at the time.

On the power play early on, the Thunderbirds opened the scoring 2:28 into the contest as Ethan Raduy scored in a rebound in close after Kaden Dundas had his initial shot from the left faceoff circle stopped by Elliot Lake netminder Cameron Smith.

Kaden Laverdiere got the Red Wings on the board in the second period when he took a pass from Alex Antoine and slid the puck past Thunderbirds netminder Kolton Bourret at 11:20 with the visitors shorthanded.

With 2:43 to go in the period, Brodie Kearns made it 2-1 Elliot Lake when he redirected a pass from Laverdiere past Bourret on a 2-on-1.

Cap pulled the Thunderbirds even when he beat Smith with a shot from the slot stick side 1:58 into the third period.

Cap then gave the locals the lead just under two minutes later, skating out of the right corner before beating Smith with a shot from the right circle stick side.

Dundas sealed the win for the Thunderbirds with an empty net goal with 10 seconds to go in regulation time.

Cap finished the night with three points on the strength of a goal and an assist while Dundas added one of each offensively.

Bourret stopped 34 shots for the Thunderbirds.

Laverdiere finished the night with a goal and an assist for Elliot Lake while Smith made 38 saves.

The two clubs are slated to meet again on Tuesday night in Elliot Lake.
