Elliot Lake City Council received a report from Museum Curator, Amelia D'Amato, at Tuesday evening’s council meeting.
The report requested, “That Council recognize the museum’s Trivia Nights for the dates of Nov. 3 and Dec. 8, 2023, as “Municipally Significant Events.”
The designation as Municipally Significant Events allows the event to be a licenced event.
The report details the background.
“The Trivia Night fundraiser was proposed June 24, 2022, during a working meeting of the Elliot Lake Museum Board to establish a new Museum Strategic Plan, where it is designated as a key action under our focus area of Education. The decision was made to have them licensed to encourage a mature crowd (occasionally overlooked in our museum programming which at the moment targets primarily school age groups), and to add to the socialization aspect of the event.”
Summarizing the purpose of Museum Trivia Nights, the report reads, “The Elliot Lake Museum’s Trivia Night fundraisers serve their dual purpose of providing accessible and entertaining programming to the community which we serve, and fundraising for the future of our museum. Trivia Nights offer the museum a way to engage with the public while we do not have a physical location, and allow us to bring facts and heirlooms of Elliot Lake’s heritage to an audience who was previously unaware (as some of the scoresheets reflect).”
Councillor Rick Bull spoke in support of the event. “According to the report, you had 60 people one night, 83 the other night, so they're well attended …”
Bull added, “… and having a beer or two trying to figure out some trivia is probably not too bad. Might even be helpful in some cases! But I think it's a good event, and keep up the good work.”
Acting Mayor Andrew Wannan also wished the event well, “Good luck with the next two trivia nights.”
Council voted unanimously in favour.
