A missing canoeist was rescued from the edge of the Sturgeon River, north of Sudbury, on Tuesday evening.

A distress call was received by the Nipissing West detachment of the OPP at approximately 11:30 a.m., a helicopter was sent out by 12:48 p.m. and he was located at 2:41 p.m.

So described Const. Rob Lewis, who noted the rough terrain prevented an immediate rescue, but that an in-air helicopter rescue was arranged by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre. He was finally pulled into a helicopter by approximately 8 p.m.

The man was reportedly in good health, Lewis said, and was believed to have become stranded after having his canoe tip.

In reaction to the incident, the OPP sent out a media release urging outdoor enthusiasts to seriously consider the following when going on a short or long excursion:

  • Advise someone the exact location of the excursion
  • Advise them of the duration of the excursion, even if it is only for the morning or afternoon
  • If possible, consult with local agencies to get up-to-date information about the area
  • Always have some sort of communication device
  • Test your communication device as you travel to ensure it is working properly
  • Update your contact with your location and progress, as knowing your location can save precious minutes during a rescue
  • Have a survival kit with you. A few examples might include things like flares, appropriate clothing, matches/lighter, saw/knife, food, map, compass, first aid kit, communication device, tarp for shelter, flashlight
  • Have prescription medication with you for any pre-existing medical condition
  • Make sure to bring water, sunscreen and bug repellent

The OPP has also reminded the public of the what3words phone app, which can help link rescuers with the user’s exact location.
