Two forest firefighters walk through a burned wooded area in Sioux Lookout during Ontario's 2023 fire season.

Outdoor Burning Regulations are now in effect for the Northeast Fire Region, according to a news release from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry's fire fighting division. At this time, updates about the fire situation will be published Mondays and Thursdays.

There are no active wildland fires in the Northeast Region, the release said. Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services for the Northeast Fire Region said there was one new wildland fire since the last report: Sault Ste Marie 2 was reported on April 16 and called out on April 17. This 0.6 hectare fire was located off Mission Road in Goulais Bay, about 26 km northwest of Sault Ste. Marie.

All of this comes after a fire season that had been described nationally as the country's worst ever, and in which air quality warnings were frequent in northern Ontario.
