Ontario reports 4,212 new COVID cases Wednesday

The province has now administered more than four million doses of vaccinations against COVID-19

Public Health Ontario has reported 4,212 new cases of COVID-19 today (April 21).

Today's report includes 4,204 recoveries and 32 new deaths.  

Today's deaths include two people between 40 and 59 years old, 14 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 16 people over the age of 79 years old.

The province has reported 242 new hospitalizations since yesterday, and 63 new admissions of COVID-19 patients to intensive care units.

The April 21 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 42,917active cases, which is down from 42,941 yesterday. This is the first time the province has reported a decrease in active cases since March 15.
  • 2,335 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, down from 2,360 reported yesterday. 
  • There are 790 patients in intensive care units because of COVID-19 (up from 773 yesterday) and 566 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 537 reported yesterday)
  • The province reported 51,877 tests were processed yesterday resulting in a 7.9 per cent positivity rate. 
  • Another 32,119 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed. To date, 13.6 million tests have been completed.
  • Of the 4,212 new cases reported today, 1,249 are from Toronto, 771 cases are from Peel, 386 are from York Region, and 124 are from Simcoe-Muskoka
  • Today's new cases include 759 individuals aged 19 and under, 1,554 people between 20 and 39 years old, 1,263 people between 40 and 59 years old, 545 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 82 people aged 80 and over.

Vaccines

  • There were 136,695 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on April 20, up from 90,409 administered on April 19.
  • As of 6 p.m. on April 20, the province reported 4,131,882 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
  • In total, 349,396 people have been fully vaccinated.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 429,123 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 378,417 recoveries and 7,789 deaths, of which 3,912 were individuals living in long-term care facilities.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 2,858.6 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

Ontario's average weekly incidence rate is 206.5 cases per 100,000 people, which is up 27.8 per cent from last week (April 5 to April 11). 

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 305 cases, weekly rate of 28.8 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 304 cases. There are 46 known active cases, including one person who is temporarily in the region but the case is not part of the local numbers. 
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 331 cases, weekly rate of 10 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 333 cases. There are 15 known active cases. 
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 512 cases, weekly rate of 86.3 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 529 cases. There are 100 known active cases. 
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 1,830 cases, weekly rate of 90.9 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,855 cases. There are 158 known active cases. 
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 147 cases, weekly rate of 21.4 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 151 cases. There are 27 known active cases. 
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 823 cases, weekly rate of 69.6 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 824 cases. There are 49 known active cases.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 3,027 cases, weekly rate of 34 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 3,023 cases. There are 54 known active cases.
