Ontario reports 2,094 new COVID cases Monday

There are 18,695 active, lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the province

Public Health Ontario has reported 2,094 new cases of COVID-19 today (March 29).

Today's report includes 1,524 recoveries and 10 new deaths.  

One of the deaths reported today was an individual between 40 and 59 years old, two were between 60 and 79 years old, and six were over the age of 79. The age of one of the people who died was not disclosed. None were residents of long-term-care facilities.

The province has reported 57 new hospitalizations since yesterday, and six new admissions of COVID-19 patients to intensive care units.

The March 29 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 18,695 active cases, which is up from 18,405 yesterday
  • 841 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, down from 917 reported yesterday. 
  • There are 382 COVID patients in intensive care units (up from 366 yesterday) and 236 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 217 reported yesterday)
  • The province reported 39,470 tests were processed yesterday resulting in a 6.1 per cent positivity rate.
  • Another 17,716 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed. To date, 12.4 million tests have been completed.
  • Of the 2,094 new cases reported today, 618 are from Toronto, 368 cases are from Peel, 277 are from York Region, and 58 are from Simcoe-Muskoka
  • There are 60 active outbreaks at long-term care homes, 42 at retirement homes, and 33 at hospitals. 
  • The new cases reported today include 425 individuals aged 19 and under, 731 people between 20 and 39 years old, 600 people between 40 and 59 years old, 293 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 43 people aged 80 and over.

Variants of concern (Ontario-wide)

  • 1,749 lab-confirmed cases of the UK variant strain of COVID-19 (B.1.1.7). 
  • 63 cases of B.1.351 (also known as the South African variant).
  • 82 cases of P.1, which is the variant strain that originated in Brazil. 
  • Another 18,907 cases have screened positive with a mutation detected, but the lineage for the variant strain not yet sequenced.
  • According to Public Health Ontario, there are delays between specimen collection and the testing required to confirm a variant of concern. As such, the reports can change and can differ from past case counts publicly reported.

Vaccines

  • There were 50,453 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on March 28, which is down from 64,950 administered on March 27. 
  • As of 6 p.m. on March 28, the province reported 2,031,735 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
  • In total, 311,248 people have been fully vaccinated.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 345,234 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 318,932 recoveries and 7,337 deaths, of which 3,893 were individuals living in long-term care facilities.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 2,322.6 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 88.5 cases per 100,000 people, which is an increase of 23.4 per cent from last week (March 13-19). 

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 227 cases, rate of 198.4 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 228 cases. There are 17 known active cases. The region is in the yellow - protect zone.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 287 cases, rate of 221.2 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 289 cases. There are six known active cases. There have been five confirmed cases of the United Kingdom (B.1.1.7) variant, and 27 confirmed cases of the South African (B.1.351) variant of concern. There are 20 tests where variants have been detected but the strain is not known yet. The region is in the yellow - protect zone.
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 350 cases, rate of 419.5 per 100,000 people. There are four known active cases. There have been two confirmed cases of the South African (B.1.351) variant of concern. There is one test where a variant has been detected but the strain is not known yet. The health unit has reported four tests have screened positive for variants and expect they are all the UK strain. The region is in the yellow- protect zone.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 1,368 cases, rate of 687.4 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,378. There are 335 known active cases. There are five confirmed UK (B.1.1.7) variants of concern. There are 393 tests where variants have been detected but the strain is not known yet. The region is in the grey - lockdown zone.
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 125 cases, rate of 382.4 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 127 cases. There are 16 known active cases. There has been eight confirmed cases of the UK (B.1.1.7) strain and one case of the South African (B.1.351) variant of concern. There are five tests where a variant has been detected but the strain is not known yet. The region is in the red - control.
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 673 cases, rate of 767.6 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 679. There are 62 known active cases. There has been one confirmed case of the UK (B.1.1.7) variant. There are five tests where variants have been detected but the strain is not known yet. The region is in the red - control zone. 
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 2,794 cases, rate of 1,863.2 per 100,000 people.  The health unit has reported 2,801 cases. There are 207 known active cases. There are four tests where a variant has been detected but the strain is not known yet. The region is in the grey - lockdown level.
