Ontario reports 1,890 new COVID cases today

The province has also confirmed 74 new hospitalizations and 28 deaths in its latest report

Public Health Ontario has reported 1,890 new cases of COVID-19 today. 

The province's public health agency also confirmed 28 deaths, which include one person between the ages of 40 and 59 years old, seven people between the ages of 60 and 79 years old, and 20 people over the age of 80. Eleven of the people whose deaths were reported today were long-term care residents. 

According to today's report, 74 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19 since yesterday, and 16 COVID patients have been admitted to intensive care units. 

There were also 1,924 new recoveries reported, bringing the total number of active cases down from yesterday. 

Of the 1,890 new cases reported today, 517 are from Toronto, 471 are from Peel, and 187 are from York Region.

The province confirmed 207 new school-related COVID cases today, including 174 students and 33 staff cases. In the last 14 days, there have been 1,616 school-related cases. There are 866 schools in Ontario with one or more confirmed cases of COVID-19, which is nearly 18 per cent of all the schools in the province. Eleven schools are currently closed because of COVID-19 cases. 

There are currently 16,089 active, lab-confirmed cases, which is down from 16,151 reported yesterday. Of those, 811 people are hospitalized (up from 794 yesterday), and 221 COVID patients are in intensive care units (up from 219 yesterday), with 129 COVID patients on ventilators (down from 132 yesterday). 

Since yesterday's report, provincial public health labs have processed 48,546 COVID tests, which produced a 4.4 per cent positivity rate. 

To date, Public Health Ontario has confirmed 132,800 cases of COVID-19 and reported 112,875 recoveries and 3,836 deaths. 

The cumulative average incidence rate in Ontario is 893.4 cases per 100,000 people. The seven-day average rate is 84.2 cases per 100,000 people from Nov. 29 to Dec. 5.

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data for the rate of cases for the health units is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 61 cases, rate of 53.3 per 100,000 people. There is one known active case. The last case was reported Dec. 2.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 88 cases, rate of 67.8 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 90 cases. There are nine known active cases. The last cases were reported Dec. 7.
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 116, rate of 139 per 100,000 people. Th health unit has also reported a probable case. There are eight known active cases. The last confirmed case was reported Dec. 4. 
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 236 cases, rate of 118.6 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 239 cases. There are nine known active cases. The last case was reported Dec. 7.
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 22 cases, rate of 67.3 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 21 cases. There are three known active cases. The last case was reported Dec. 8.
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 132 cases, rate of 150.6 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 135 cases, as well as two probable cases. There are 10 known active cases. The last cases were reported Dec. 9.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 385 cases, rate of 256.7 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 386 cases. There are 114 known active cases. The last cases were reported Dec. 8.

The cumulative incidence rate for COVID-19 in Ontario is 893.4 cases per 100,000 people.
