Ontario reports 1,076 new COVID cases Friday

The province has also reported 1,415 recoveries, 18 new deaths, 38 hospitalizations

Public Health Ontario has reported 1,076 new cases of COVID-19 today (Feb. 12).

Today's report includes 1,415 new recoveries and 18 new deaths, eight were residents at long-term care homes.

The deaths reported today include two people between 40 and 59 years old, five people between the ages of 60 and 79 years old, and 11 people over the age of 80.

The province has reported 38 new hospitalizations since yesterday, and two new admissions of COVID-19 patients to intensive care units.

The Feb. 12 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 12,496 active cases, which is down from 12,853 yesterday
  • 763 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, down from 883 reported yesterday. 
  • There are 295 COVID patients in intensive care units (down from 299) and 204 COVID patients on ventilators (down from 211 yesterday).
  • The province reported 62,012 tests were processed yesterday resulting in a 2.2 per cent positivity rate.
  • Another 38,345 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed. To date, 10.2 million tests have been completed.
  • Of the 1,076 new cases reported today, 361 are from Toronto, 210 cases are from Peel, 122 are from York Region, and 24 are from Simcoe-Muskoka
  • There are 191 active outbreaks at long-term care homes, 109 at retirement homes and 49 at hospitals. 
  • Of the cases reported today there are 165 people under 19 years old, 346 people between 20 and 39 years old, 369 people between 40 and 59 years old, 169 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 23 people over the age of 80. 

Variant of concern

  • The province has reported 275 lab-confirmed cases of the UK variant strain of COVID-19 (B.1.1.7). 
  • The province has reported three cases of B.1.351 (also known as the South African variant).
  • According to Public Health Ontario, there are delays between specimen collection and the testing required to confirm a variant of concern. As such, the reports can change and can differ from past case counts publicly reported.

Vaccine update for Feb. 12:

  • There were 15,605 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on Feb 11, up from 14,717 on Feb. 10.
  • As of 8 p.m. on Feb. 11, the province reported 442,441 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
  • In total, 151,282 people have been fully vaccinated, having received two doses of vaccine, which are to be given a few weeks apart.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 283,587 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 264,459 recoveries and 6,632 deaths, of which 3,777 were individuals living in long-term care homes.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 1,907.8 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 60.8 cases per 100,000 people from Feb. 2 to Feb. 8, which is a decrease of 21.6 per cent compared to Jan. 27 to Feb. 2 when the average weekly incidence rate was 77.6 cases per 100,000 people.

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 189 cases, rate of 165.2 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 190 cases. There are 22 known active cases. The weekly incidence rate is 14 cases per 100,000.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 218 cases, rate of 168 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 221 cases. There are 23 known active cases. The weekly incidence rate is 19.3 cases per 100,000.
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 302 cases, rate of 361.9 per 100,000 people. There are 27 known active cases. The weekly incidence rate is 21.6 cases per 100,000.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 571 cases, rate of 286.9 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 556 cases. There are 35 known active cases. The weekly incidence rate is 14.6 cases per 100,000. There are 3 confirmed variants of concern (VOC) cases, both are the UK (B.1.1.7) strain.
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 91 cases, rate of 278.4 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 92 cases. There is one known active case. The weekly incidence rate is 6.1 cases per 100,000. 
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 282 cases, rate of 321.6 per 100,000 people. There are 14 known active cases. The weekly incidence rate is 18.2 cases per 100,000.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 1,103 cases, rate of 735.5 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,104 cases. There are 106 known active cases. The weekly incidence rate is 47.3 cases per 100,000.
