Ontario cops warn of Taylor Swift ticket scam after two buyers duped

Shake it off? South Simcoe Police have received two reports of victims losing money in Facebook Marketplace deals, weeks after a SooToday story about a similar scam

Police in South Simcoe are warning residents about online scams involving ticket sales for upcoming Taylor Swift concerts.

The southern Ontario police force has received two reports of victims responding to ads for Swift tickets on Facebook Marketplace.

“In each case, when e-transfer payments were made, the ‘seller’ stopped all communication. The scammer then usually blocks the victim’s account or deletes the fake account, leaving the buyer without their money or tickets,” police said in a news release.

Police offered the following safety tips: “Always try to exchange items and money in a public space. Do some research on the seller. Avoid making transactions through Interac e-Transfer as once the money has been deposited, the transaction cannot be reversed. Remember, if it seems too good to be true, it’s probably a scam.”

As SooToday recently reported, a local mother was scammed out of $1,200 after trying to buy tickets on Facebook to one of Swift's sold-out concerts in Toronto.

"They seemed so legitimate," the woman said of the online fraudster who tricked her.
