A report authored by Elliot Lake's Interim Curator of the the City's Nuclear and Mining Museum, Amelia D'Amato, goes before a special meeting of City Council Monday afternoon.

In it, D'Amato advocates for inclusion of more space for the Museum in the Arts Centre, planned for the site of the old Civic Centre on Highway 108.

The report comes via the Recreation and Culture Standing Committee and recommends adding 1,000 sq ft more space for the Nuclear and Mining Museum in future iterations of the design for the new Elliot Lake Arts and Culture Centre.

The Museum is designated 2,285 sq ft. of exhibition space and 745 sq ft of storage, for a combined total space of 3,030 sq ft.

The space designated to the Museum for exhibition in the former Lester B. Pearson Civic Centre was 3,787 sq ft, spread throughout the building.

"While we are not intending to replicate the past museum in our new centre, we will still require the requisite room for permanent, circulating, and travelling exhibitions," D'Amato wrote.

"We will also require the requisite storage space to provide room to house all of the City’s artifacts and art collection properly in one secure area, providing also the space for further accessioning and condition reporting," she continued.

"The (Museum) Advisory Board and city staff do not believe that the approved design of the new Arts and Culture Centre fulfills this need and urge for more space to be allocated in the new museum, of which they believe 1,000 sq ft would  be suitable.

"The impact of this recommendation on the Total Construction Cost of the new Arts and Culture Centre would be determined by the architect consultants," D'Amato concluded.

The virtual special meeting of Elliot Lake City Council to consider this is set for 5:30 p.m. Monday afternoon. It will be live-streamed on the city's website

There may be a delay of the start time, though, since another virtual meeting of  the Finance and Administration Committee is scheduled prior to that at 4 p.m.
