A Timmins-area assistant Crown Attorney is facing a professional misconduct hearing for allegations that include discrimination against Indigenous people accused of crimes.

An upcoming tribunal will determine if lawyer Gerrit Verbeek engaged in professional misconduct. A notice of application was filed by the Law Society of Ontario against Verbeek on Nov. 23.

Verbeek was called to bar in 1995.

The filing pertains to his role as assistant Crown Attorney between November 2018 and January 2023.

It alleges that he engaged in discriminatory conduct and/or harassment against Indigenous accused persons, failed to provide legal services to the standard of a competent lawyer and failed to act honourably as a prosecutor and encourage public respect for the administration of justice.

None of the allegations have been tested by the tribunal.
