One new forest fire was confirmed earlier today in Manitoulin Island, with two more fires still active in the northeast region.

Sudbury 1 is a 4.5-hectare fire, and it's not yet under control, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF). The fire broke out on the northeastern point of Manitoulin Island, about eight km south of Whitefish Falls off Highway 6.

Sault Ste. Marie 1, which started on May 15, is being held and measures nine hectares. The fire is located about 0.5 km south of Garden Lake or about 15.5 km southwest of Ranger Lake.

Bancroft 2, also started May 15, is an 8.8-hectare fire and is being held. It broke out on the east side of Black Lake and is about 10 km north of Norland.

The MNRF says the northeast region is showing "high hazard" from Sault Ste. Marie, north to Lake Superior Provincial Park and east to Sudbury. Areas along Georgian Bay and going east from Parry Sound through Bracebridge, Kawartha Lakes, Bancroft and the Renfrew areas are also showing "high hazard."

Areas north of Sudbury, including North Bay, Pembroke, and Temiskaming Shores, are showing "low" to "moderate hazards," according to MNRF.
