St. Joseph’s General Hospital Elliot Lake has announced the appointment of a new vice president of finance and corporate services/CFO.

Christopher Piel will succeed Tim Vine, who has recently accepted the role of hospital CEO in Blind River.

Piel's appointment takes effect Jan. 9

Piel is a chartered professional accountant and holds a master's in business administration from Laurentian University.

He was born and raised in Germany and has been living in the Sudbury, Algoma and Elliot Lake area for more than 19 years.

Piel has family in Elliot Lake and surrounding area. He speaks German and English.

Piel has more than 10 years’ experience working in the healthcare sector.

Prior to joining the St. Joseph’s General Hospital Elliot Lake team, he worked as an external auditor and moved into the healthcare sector by working at the Canadian Mental Health Associations Sudbury/ Manitoulin in the role of manager of finance and later as director of finance and corporate services.

Piel has also recently worked at Health Sciences North in the director of finance role.

In his previous roles, Piel has been part of a multi-disciplinary team overseeing the financial and corporate services such as human resources and IT.

Piel is a team player and always keeps the interest of all stakeholders in his sights, the hospital said in a news release.

He respects and values different perspectives and complements the decision-making process with his diverse background.

In his free time, Piel enjoys going for rides with friends and family on the Elliot Lake and area snowmobile trails and playing a round or two at the local golf course.

The hospital noted Piel’s late father was a forest engineer in Germany and this helped him understand and respect the beauty of nature that Canada and more specifically the north has to offer.

He grew up with the goal of living and making his career in the north and is looking forward to an extensive career with St. Joseph’s General Hospital and becoming part of this new family.

Jeremy Stevenson, chief executive officer at St. Joseph's General Hospital Elliot Lake, thanked departing CFO Vine for his dedication, service and support of SJGHEL over the past year.

“He raised the bar for our financial services and has put us in a strong position moving forward. We will miss him and wish him success in his new position,” Stevenson said.
