Hours after a scathing report by Integrity Commissioner E4m of Sault Ste. Marie investigating complaints about the behaviour of Elliot Lake City Council members, including himself and former Councillor Tammy Van Roon, Mayor Dan Marchisella has shared his opinions with ElliotLakeToday.

"Much of the report was a surprise to all of Council, including myself, and as I mentioned last night, extremely sobering," said Marchisella. "On a personal note in regards to reports on myself, it was stated repeatedly that issues concerning my personal involvement were not out of malice, but working towards the best interest of the community.

"Members of council did and still do have many questions about the whole process of the investigations, including myself, as to not knowing all of the complaints filed until last minute, and not have a chance to provide a full rebuttal or evidence to prove yourself innocent. These issues will be discussed and hopefully rectified for future allegations and investigations."

Marchisella added, "Our CAO Dan Gagnon will be condensing the report on recommended sanctions to bring forward to council for the next regular meeting, at this time councillors will have the opportunity to speak to the specific recommendations and allegation findings, but will not be able to vote on sanctions against themselves, that will be the will of the remaining councillors. As was mentioned also last night, two recommendations on Conflict of Interest have been sent to the Provincial Courts, and the Courts will decide the fate of councilors (Pearce and Patrie), our Municipal Council has no say in these matters."

"I am extremely sorry that our community has had to endure this process and hope that council can get beyond this division and begin to work together for the best interest of all Elliot Lakers. We have many great initiatives on the go right now, and this process has hindered staff and councilors from being able to put forward appropriate attention and time to seeing the business of the city move forward. As this speedbump gets behind us, I know that all members of council will be able to pull together and get things done, and done right."

It is expected that sanctions, if any, which were recommended by E4m in its 31 page report will be decided upon by Elliot Lake council on September 23.

The E4m recommendations include suspension of pay for Mayor Marchisella and Councillor Chris Patrie for various durations and the forced resignation of Councillor Patrie from Elliot Lake Council.
