The Elliot Lake non-profit which provides emergency housing for men and women, Elliot Lake Women's Group Inc., now operating Maplegate and Larry's Place, has a plan to convert existing homes at 143 Frobel Drive and 7 Diefenbaker Court.

The proponent says it's to take the pressure off the two existing shelters.

The plan which would involve zoning changes in both neighbourhoods, comes before Elliot Lake's Bylaw and Planning Committee during its virtual special meeting at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.

In both cases, zoning would need to be changed to permit five women to live at Frobel, each with her own bedroom and four men, each with his own bedroom, on Diefenbaker

If approved, both new buildings would need site specific zoning changes before being allowed to operate.

Pending committee approval, the zoning requests would be dealt with at public hearings likely  the week of Dec. 6.

The plan is for the 143 Frobel home to be used by women who are residents of the present centre and are looking to move out of Maplegate, but face multiple barriers including long wait lists, to obtain affordable housing.

Maplegate Executive Director Melody Rose wrote in her submission, "The creation of this transition home will relieve pressure on Maplegate for emergency requirements.

"The home has five bedrooms. There is a washroom on each level and two entrances.

"The creation of this transition home will relieve pressure on Maplegate for emergency situations. The home will be fully furnished," Rose continued.

"Each person would have their own bedroom. Rent will vary from bedroom to bedroom and will be inclusive of hydro, cable, internet, gas heat and a land line telephone. There are security cameras for this site monitored by Maplegate.

"There is parking for about six cars but most applicants will not have a vehicle," Rose concluded.

A similar request to allow for the creation of a four bedroom men's shelter in a home at 7 Diefenbaker Court will be looked at by committee members as well.

The meeting will be live streamed on the City of Elliot Lake website, at 4:30 p.m. Monday afternoon.
