Many happy Elliot Lake folks were honoured at the 25th annual Mayor's Levee, held on January 1

Elliot Lake citizens received awards for contributions to the community at the 25th annual Mayor's Levee today. Groups included the Elliot Lake Aquatics Club, Cecil's Korean Martial Arts Centre, Korean Martial's Arts Centre, Elliot Lake Secondary School Tennis Club, Wrestling Club and the Puppeteers.

City councillor Ed Pearce presented certificates for participation and said he was very proud of the accomplishments of the participants.

"Be proud of what you have accomplished this past year," he said, addressing a crowd of over 100 listeners. "Thank you for growing in our community."

Also on deck to help was fellow city councillor Tammy VanRoon. She also praised honourees for excelling in their perspective activities.

"Not a lot of people can do what you do," she said. "I can't wait to see what this year has in store for you."

Mayor Dan Marchisella addressed the recipients with pride as he wished them well in the coming year.

"You learn and you grow," he said. "This is your year to grow even more and shine."

The list of recipients follows:

Elliot Lake Acquatic Club:

  • Emma Young: for participating as a member ELAC and for winning the High Point Long Course at the Regional Championship held in Sudbury in June 2017.
  • Leiya Fortin: for being in the under 10 category and under the Medley Relays and Freestyle Relay Team winning gold at the championships in Markham in April and winning gold in both relays at the Long Course Championships held in Sudbury in June 2017.
  • Avery Sterling: for participating in the Iron Man Race, which consisted of 1,500 Meter Freestyle, 400 Meter Individual Medley, 400 Meter Freestyle, 200 Meter Fly and 50 Meter Freestyle, winning the High Points Trophy for 11 and 12 year olds held in North Bay on Feb. 17-18 in 2017.
  • Ava Young: for winning gold in the 100 Meter Butterfly, silver in the 50 Meter Backstroke and bronze in the 50 Meter Butterfly at the Ontario Team Challenge Swim Meet.
  • Abbie McGonegal: for placing first in 25 Meter Free, 100 Meter in Free, second in 100 Meter Backstroke and third in 50 Meter Free, 25 Meter Backstroke, 50 Meter Breaststroke, 100 Meter Breast Stroke and placing second for high points for 10 and under girls at the North Bay Invitational held on Feb. 17-18 in 2017.
  • Reilly McGonegal: for placing third twice, fourth, two fifths and a sixth place finish in her events in the eight years of age category at the North Bay Invitational Meet held on Feb. 17-18 in 2017.
  • Sidney Ambercrombie: for placing fifth in seven of her races and fourth in the other races in the 10 years of age category at the North Bay Invitational Meet held on Feb. 17-18 in 2017.
  • Lauren Sams: for competing in seven individual events and bettering her time in six of the races. Lauren also helped her relay team win second at the North Bay Invitational Meet held on Feb. 17-18 in 2017.
  • Jordan Sterling: for competing at the North Bay Invitational Meet held on Feb. 17-18 in 2017, where she had two seconds, two thirds and a fourth. She was also a member of the girls under 10 and under relay team that took gold in the 200 Meter Medley Relay and was also a member of three other relays that came in second.

Korean Martial Arts:

  • Andrea Kay: for recently being awarded a red stripe on her blue belt at the Korean Martial Arts Centre of Elliot Lake's Dec. 2017 grading. Andrea has been doing Martial Arts for three years and is Korean Martial Arts Centre Elliot Lake's highest ranking student below Black Belt. Over the past few years, Andrea has won medals in many tournaments across Northern Ontario.
  • Brookelyn Barry: for being recognized by the Korean Martial Arts Centre of Elliot Lake as "Top New Student." Over the course of four short months, she has learned the first open hand forms in its entirety. Brookelyn trains in both the Junior and Intermediate classes and helps teach the "Tiny Tigers" class. Brookelyn was the only student to receive two yellow stripes at KMAC Elliot Lake's Dec. Hapkido grading.

Elliot Lake Secondary School Tennis Club:

  • Chantel Berthelot: for participating as a member of the Elliot Lake Secondary School Tennis Club. Chantel and her teammate place third in the Women's Doubles. The tournament was held on Manitoulin Island on May 11, 2017.
  • Tamara Burgess: for participating as a member of the Elliot Lake Secondary School Tennis Club. Tamara and her teammate placed second in the Mixed Doubles. The tournament was held on Manitoulin Island on May 11, 2017.
  • Kieren Freitag: for participating as a member of the Elliot Lake Secondary School Tennis Club. Kieren and his teammate placed second in the Men's Doubles. The tournament was held on Manitoulin Island on May 11, 2017.
  • Julien Houle-Tymeczeko: for participating as a member of the Elliot Lake Secondary School Tennis Club. Julien palced second in the Men's Singles. The tournament was held on Manitoulin Island on May 11, 2017.
  • Hashim Yawazi: for participating as a member of the Elliot Lake Secondary School Tennis Club. Hashim and his teammate placed second in the Mixed Doubles. The tournament was held on Manitoulin Island on May 11, 2017.
  • Trent Heard: for participating as a member of the Elliot Lake Secondary School Tennis Club. Trent and his teammate placed second in the Men's Doubles. The tournament was held on Manitoulin Island on May 11, 2017.
  • Taylor Caron: for participating as a member of the Elliot Lake Secondary School Tennis Club. Taylor and her teammate placed third in the Women's Doubles. The tournament was held on Manitoulin Island on May 11, 2017.
  • Katie Albert: for participating as a member of the Elliot Lake Secondary School Tennis Club. Katie placed first in the Women's Singles. The tournament was held on Manitoulin Island on May 11, 2017. Katie also advanced to NOSSA, which was held in Sudbury on May 18, 2017 where she placed third, qualifying her for OFSSA.

Wrestling:

  • Trinity Antoine: for winning silver in the Women's 57.5 kilogram class at the NOSSA Championships held in Sudbury on Feb. 16, 2017.
  • Alex Kane: for winning gold in the Men's 72 kilogram Class at the NOSSA Championships held in Sudbury on Feb. 16, 2017. 
  • Adam Boyle: for winning gold in the Men's 61 kilogram Weight Class at the NOSSA Championships held in Sudbury on Feb. 16, 2017.
  • Ayla Thurston: for winning gold in the Women's 57.5 kilogram Class at the NOSSA Championships held in Sudbury on Feb. 16, 2017.

Cecil's Korean Martial Arts Centre:

  • Megan Gagnon: for winning first in Formals and first in Sparring at the Korah Collegiate and Vocational School in Sault Ste. Marie on April 23, 2017.
  • Dana Jacques: for winning first in Formals, second in Weapons, second in Sparring and fourth in Self Defence at the Korah Collegiate and Vocational School in Sault Ste. Marie on April 23, 2017.
  • Jasmine King: for winning fourth in Formals at the Korah Collegiate and Vocational School in Sault Ste. Marie on April 23, 2017.
  • Tate Lawson: for winning third in Formals and third in Self Defence at the Korah Collegiate and Vocational School in Sault Ste. Marie on April 23, 2017.
  • Vander Lavigne: for winning first in Weapons, first in Self Defence, second in Formals and fourth in Sparring at the Korah Collegiate and Vocational School in Sault Ste. Marie on April 23, 2017.

  • Rebecca McKay: for attending the Nationals, where she received two golds, a silver and a fourth, which qualified her to attend the Worlds as a member of Team Canada in November 2017. Rebecca won silver in Chinese Forms and bronze in Fighting.
