Local businessman Blain McElrae is spearheading a local rally in support of the trucker convoy in Ottawa.

Elliot Lake drivers are being recruited for a mobile rally being planned in the city in two weeks in support of the goals of the trucker's convoy in Ottawa.

Blain McElrea is a small business owner looking for motorists to join him in a drive-around rally on the afternoon of Saturday, Feb. 19.

"I was born and raised here and a big fan of Elliot Lake and our community," he said.

He wants people to know the issue is much larger than the right to choose about getting vaccinated against COVID-19.

"My motivation is to do the right thing and speak up for our rights and freedoms re the Charter of Rights to speak up for those who aren't able to, for whatever reason," McElrea said

McElrea says the rolling protest is planned to start at 1 p.m. and is expected to last a couple of hours, involving a slow roll of vehicles along city streets.

"We won't be blocking or barricading anyone from safely commuting," he explained.

"Our mission is to wake up the community to what's really happening in Ottawa, why they're down there, who's doing what," McElrea said. "The reason we've embraced this action is due to the stories that have come out of the legacy media and from (Prime Minister Justin) Trudeau himself. How he's mischaracterized what has been happening."

He said the vaccine fight is a distraction.

"Our hearts were broken, losing our rights and freedoms and then you see our effort being disparaged by the media was just a bridge too far."

The group has been in touch with the OPP which has spelled out a list of dos and don'ts for the planned rally. Police have advised that those who take part have the right to protest, but not the right to be violent.
