Local figure skaters glide to medals

Two skaters from Elliot Lake Skating Club participated in Nickel Blades Provincial Series in Garson, bringing home silver medals

Two skaters from the Elliot Lake Skating Club attended the Nickel Blades Provincial Series in Garson from Dec. 2 to 4 and came away with medals in the competition, according to coach Chantal Robert.

“Evalina Zep, 9, attended her very first competition,” the coach said.  “She began her competition journey Friday in the Creative Improv 1 event. Skaters entering this event have to create their own routine to a piece of music selected by the organizing committee. Evalina skated very well and earned herself a silver. Her competition weekend continued on Sunday, where she performed her Star 2 FreeSkate program and earned a Bronze. She finished her weekend in the Star 2 Elements event and was awarded silver.”

“Davina Weber, 15, returned to the competitive scene after a few years. She began the weekend in the Creative Improv 1 event receiving silver,” Robert said.  “She also performed her Showcase titled CanCan and received a Silver. Saturday, Davina entered the Star 4 FreeSkate event, which requires an axel jump and skated her way to a personal best and finished fifth overall. She finished her weekend on Sunday in the Star 3 Elements event and took home another silver.

"Both skaters represented our club really well and are looking forward to competing again next season. They have worked really hard during the past two months to prepare. Both skaters entered new levels and achieved their goals; I am really proud of them," the coach said.

The skaters will now shift gear and begin preparation for the annual skating show set for Feb. 12.
