WATCH: Ontario allots $1.3 billion to enhance COVID-19 testing, contact tracing

Four million COVID tests have been completed in Ontario since the onset of the pandemic, more than all other provinces combined

Update:
Today, Premier Doug Ford announced that the province is investing $1.3 billion to enhance COVID-19 testing and contact tracing.

This funding will be used to expand lab capacity, reduce testing backlogs, and build on testing capacity to 50,000 per day, among other initiatives.

An additional $360 million is being allotted to expand capacity in COVID-19 assessment centres across the province.

Minister of Health Christine Elliott said that four million COVID tests have been completed in Ontario since the onset of the pandemic, more than all other provinces combined.

Testing practices have helped the province determine if and where the virus is spreading, she said.

"What we found was that it wasn't circulating widely in every community," Elliott explained. "This was an important learning that helped make an informed decision to target our resources to those experiencing symptoms, to protect the most vulnerable, and support outbreak investigations."
