Largest wildfire in the region finally under control

It took firefighters a month to bring the 5,800-hectare Sudbury 17 fire under control

The Sudbury 17 fire, the largest forest fire burning in the region, is finally under control.

Declared June 4, the fire burning north of Massey and about three kilometres west of Madawanson Lake grew to more than 5,800 hectares before it was declared under control on July 3.

With the blaze under control, the travel, use and access restrictions that were in place in the vicinity of the fire have been revoked as of July 3. 

The other major fire in the region, Sudbury 10, which was declared June 2 continues to burn 1,370 hectares west of Fox Lake. The fire is now under control.

Province wide, there are currently 22 active wildland fires in the Northeast. Of these, four are not under control, five are being held, seven are under control and six are being observed.

One new fire was confirmed in the region on Monday. Sudbury 23 is about 0.2 hectares in size and is located 23 kilometres northeast of Lake Wanapitei. It is being held.

The fire hazard for much of the region is listed as high, though there is a circle of area around Beaver Lake where the situation is listed as extreme.

Other fires of note:

  • Cochrane 7 was confirmed on June 2. It is a 37,742 hectare wildland fire is located northeast of Lake Abitibi. Crews, intermediate helicopters, and heavy equipment committed to the fire. It is not under control.
  • Cochrane 11 was confirmed on June 17. It’s estimated at 805 hectares and is located approximately 5 km west of the community of Fort Albany and south of Big Island. FireRanger crews are making good progress suppressing this fire. The fire is being held.
  • Chapleau 3 was confirmed on June 1. It is a 3,916 hectare wildland fire located 2 kilometres south of October Lake and 2.5 kilometres west of Vichaw Lake. As of this afternoon it is being held.
  • Chapleau 6 was confirmed on June 4. It is a 1,228 hectare wildland fire located 2.5 kilometres west of Morin Lake and 1 kilometre east of Bolkow Lake. As of this afternoon it is being held.
