Another Sault Ste. Marie native will have his name forever engraved on hockey's Holy Grail.
Michael Amadio and his Las Vegas Golden Knights captured the Stanley Cup last month, beating the Florida Panthers four games to one.
"To be able to hoist it was just a surreal feeling that I don't even know how to explain," Amadio said, during a recent appearance on Village Media's Inside the Village podcast.
What went through Amadio's mind as a teammate passed him Canada's most iconic trophy?
“I just wanted not to fall on the ice with it,” he laughed. “I think that was the only thing I was thinking of.”
He didn’t fall, of course. And as Amadio skated with the Cup on the night of June 13, friends and family were glued to their TVs in his hometown of Sault Ste. Marie, soaking it all in.
“I don’t even remember the moment,” he told Inside the Village. “It goes by so fast.”
What Amadio does remember — and will never forget — is the phone call he made from the ice: to his grandmother back home, his biggest fan, who watched him skate from when he was a little boy.
“I think she was at every game, she would always be there supporting me,” Amadio said. “She stayed up late to watch the game, so just to hear her voice was a pretty special moment.”
