Carol Hughes will resume her duties as Assistant Deputy Speaker and Chair of the Committee of the Whole after being re-appointed to the position today.  Hughes join two other parliamentarians supporting the Speaker of the House.

Although she wasn’t successful in her initial bid to be elected Speaker by MPs, Hughes is confident this appointment proves she is seen as someone who can help improve decorum in the House.

“I wasn’t surprised that a government member ultimately won the top job, but I am honoured that I have been chosen again to support that position,” said Hughes. “I look forward to playing an integral role in making the House more functional and less partisan in this minority scenario.”

Hughes says she will continue to defend the interests of her constituents while serving the House as a Deputy Speaker.

“I will continue to introduce legislation and work on issues important to Northerners,” said Hughes. “I showed in the last parliament that I can do this job while ensuring Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing is well represented.”
