Elliot Lake’s bylaw and planning committee will look at a property rezoning when it meets Monday that is expected to pave the way for a 60-unit hotel.
The plan was briefly mentioned at Monday evening’s council meeting by CAO Daniel Gagnon and economic development manager Steve Antunes.
Antunes in a telephone interview with Elliot Lake Today that the rezoning is expected to be approved by the committee to allow it to be discussed in public at a later council meeting possibly in April.
The site is at 20 Lisbon Road currently the location of a former school near Spine Beach. The vacant building was severely damaged in a fire in November 2021.
Antunes said the committee meeting regarding this rezoning application is open to the public, although he expects it will be brief.
Speculation about a new hotel being built in town has run rampant on social meeting especially in regard to the declaration of the former civic centre property off Highway 108 being declared surplus and the city looking for expressions of interest in the property which it received three of.
The expressions of interest were just that, acting mayor Andrew Wannan expressed recently. According to him there was no obligation for the city to choose any one of the three expressions of interest.
