Much of Northern Ontario is under a heat warning issued by Environment Canada Wednesday afternoon.
Hot and humid conditions are expected into the weekend with temperatures from 28 to 30 degress Celsius possible and humidex values making it feel more like 35 to 38.
Areas affected by the warning include:
- Blind River - Thessalon
- Elliot Lake - Ranger Lake
- Espanola - Killarney
- Sault Ste. Marie - St. Joseph Island
- Searchmont - Montreal River Harbour - Batchawana Bay
- White River - Dubreuilville
Algoma Public Health also issued a statement Wednesday afternoon regarding the warning.
"Exposure to extreme heat and humidity can lead to illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke," Melissa Francella, a public health inspector with Algoma Public Health, said in a prepared statement. "Those most at risk for developing heat-related illnesses include infants and children, older adults, those with chronic health conditions, and people who exercise or are involved in demanding outdoor work for prolonged periods."
APH also issued some tips on how to deal with the hotter weather, including:
- Avoid going out in the sun from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- If you are in the sun, wear a hat (wide-brimmed if possible).
- Wear sunscreen.
- Wear loose, lightweight clothing.
- Spend some time in air-conditioned places such as a shopping mall.
- Take frequent cool showers or baths.
- Drink plenty of water. Avoid alcoholic beverages, coffee and cola.
- Cook during the coolest times of the day.
- Reschedule outdoor sport practices, exercising, etc.
