Tammy Brown said she's both excited and proud to throw her hat into the ring, announcing herself this week as the fourth unofficial candidate for Elliot Lake City Council, 2022.

If elected in the municipal election next Oct. 24, she told ElliotLakeToday she looks forward to representing people fairly along with running a positive campaign.

"I will display integrity and honesty in all my interactions and treat all that I encounter with the utmost respect.

"If elected (I will) listen openly to the concerns of all our community members with the goal to help our community thrive economically," she went on.

She told us she was born in 1974, a miner's daughter whose family saw a lot of moving when she was a child and a younger woman. In 1987 the family settled down in Elliot Lake when her dad took a job here at Denison Mines.

"I knew immediately that Elliot Lake would be my home. In 2015 I was married and both my spouse and I were able to gain employment and set down roots in Elliot Lake.

Brown said she sees her run for council as an opportunity to give back to the community she calls home.

If elected she wants to focus on Elliot Lake's affordable housing crisis observing that resale homes here have doubled in price while rentals are sparse.

Because of these factors, Brown says housing has become out of reach for most of the population in our community.

She wants to attract new investment to the city and to foster a fresh community  outlook, starting this year.

She believes that would mean looking at future development and economic activity as ways to help overcome the negative effects of COVID-19.

"Now is the time to focus on immediate issues that our community is facing as everyone has been hit with income loss and struggling throughout the pandemic," Brown concluded.

Brown says the word "transparency" has been tossed around frivolously when discussing the city's business dealings.

She believes the community should demand more information on city operations and decision making from its elected council.

She also believes honesty, compassion, leadership, good moral standards and, most importantly, strong integrity are all qualities council candidates need to demonstrate to the voters if they want to get elected.

Brown's campaign theme is, "Elliot Lake Matters!"

Elsewhere on this year's municipal ballot are two incumbent Huron Superior Catholic District School Board members now registered for a run for re-election. They are Lindsay Liske of McKerrow and Kathleen Rosilius, both of Elliot Lake.

Reginald Simon, also of Elliot Lake, is going after a spot on the English HSCDSB board of trustees as well.
