Students at École secondaire catholique La Renaissance (Espanola) have the great opportunity to take part in real-life experiences as part of their science lessons. For a number of years now, the students have been taking part in a fish farming project which enables them to support their community by releasing a variety of fish into the waterways of the Espanola region.

By taking part in this project, the students are able to discover the importance of ecosystems while at the same time integrating several subjects: chemistry with the determination of the pH system, physics with the pressures of the system in order to improve water circulation, biology with the anatomy and development of fish, as well as the functioning and importance of the ecosystem.

The La Renaissance students play a key role in the success of this project by being responsible for the upkeep of the fish farm and monitoring the development of the eggs until they hatch. The students then transfer the fish to a suitable ecosystem in the community of Espanola.
