Fire department to check for smoke and CO alarms

Failing to comply with the fire code smoke alarm requirements can result in a ticket for $360 or a fine of up to $100,000

The Elliot Lake Fire Department will be conducting door-to-door smoke alarm and CO checks during Fire Prevention Week Oct. 8-14, form 6-8 p.m.

Fire personnel will be checking homes in the new subdivision area, according to a news release.

You must have a working smoke alarm on every level of a home and outside all sleeping areas. Having the required number of smoke alarms will me an earlier warning of fire, which results in faster escape by occupants, earlier arrival by the fire department and ultimately less risk to firefighters and the public.

Smoke alarms can be purchased at local hardware stores. For homeowners, tenants, and individual landlords, non-compliance with the Fire Code smoke alarm requirements can result in a ticket for $360 or a fine of up to $100,000.
