The Elliot Lake Fire Department responded to a pair of fires on Wednesday.

At approximately 10:15 a.m., firefighters responded to a call at a row house complex on Valley Crescent.

Upon arrival, firefighters were met with heavy smoke and flames showing int he middle unit and struggled to get it under control, according to a release.

The complex was heavily damaged as a result of the fire and one tenant was rescued from a second storey, treated on scene by EMS and released.

"At this time, there is no cost estimate for damages and the cause of fire is unknown," a release said. "The Ontario Fire Marshal along with the Elliot Lake Fire Department are conducting an investigation for probable cause."

Shortly before noon, firefighters responded to a bush fire behind Esten Drive South.

The fire has been deemed under control, though fire crews had some difficulty getting it under control due to high winds. The Ministry of Natural Resources was called in to assist.

The fire department, with the help of the MNR, is still investigating the cause of the fire.
