Feds invest $1 million for Z’gamok Construction of Massey

Federal funding helps Indigenous-owned business capitalize on opportunities within Northern Ontario’s mining industry

Sudbury MP Viviane Lapointe announced a $1 million investment by the Government of Canada Friday for the purchase of 10 heavy trucks for Z’gamok Construction LP, a First Nation owned company based in Massey.

The announcement was made on behalf of the  Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services and Minister responsible for FedNor, and is expected to create 10 or more full-time jobs, said a news release from the Lapointe's office.

“This investment of $1 million will help Z’gamok Construction LP to scale up, create jobs, and pave the way for the long-term prosperity of both the company and the Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation. Businesses are creating the jobs that ensure communities thrive. That’s how we will ensure a Northern Ontario economy that works for everyone," Hajdu said in the release.

Specifically, the FedNor funding will allow Z’gamok Construction to capitalize on immediate and potential future opportunities through Impact and Benefits Agreements with Vale Canada, and KGHM International Ltd. for its Victoria Mine project, located just west of Sudbury.

Victoria Mine is under construction and the new haulage trucks will provide Z’gamok with the capacity to qualify for major haulage contracts. The new trucks will also help position Z’gamok to provide additional services during all phases of Victoria Mine project, while supporting its expanding role at Vale’s Totten mine, said the release.

Lapointe, who took part in the actual announcement said the investment will help the company capitalize on mining industry contracts.

“Empowering Indigenous communities and businesses is not just the right thing to do, it makes us stronger as a nation. This $1 million investment means Z’gamok Construction LP can capitalize on strategic alliances within Sudbury’s mining industry to expand and create high-quality jobs. The new Victoria Mine project has enormous economic potential for our region and I’m pleased FedNor is investing in Z’gamok Construction LP to support its development," said Lapointe.

The investment was welcome news for Chief Angus Toulouse, Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation

“This FedNor investment will allow us to purchase the new hauling trucks we need to expand Z’gamok Construction LP to meet the growing demand for its products and services. I am pleased that the Government of Canada is supporting our efforts to create local jobs, become more competitive and position Z’gamok Construction LP and the Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation for long-term success.”
