Elliot Lake's Emergency Food Bank pleased with community support (19 photos)

The Moose FM 94.1 radiothon raised more than $12,000 cash and collected $300 worth of non-perishable food

Elliot Lakers were treated to homegrown music this past weekend for the Moose 94.1 FM’s annual radiothon in support of the Elliot Lake Emergency Food Bank.

Volunteers were on deck outside to collect donations of cash as well as food and toiletries. Even more volunteers were inside the studio with radio host Bob Alexander to man the telephones for donations and to help the public with the silent auction.

This event set a one-day record by raising more than $12,000 and collecting $300 worth of non-perishable food items.

Elliot Lake Emergency Food Bank volunteer Sarah Mills expressed her gratitude towards the community for the help and support.

“Just want to give a big thank you to all those people who were involved in today's radiothon,” she said. “Thanks to all the volunteers, the musical talent, the search and rescue who ran the BBQ, volunteers on the street, volunteers inside the station. To all the citizens of Elliot Lake who gave so generously, thank you. And to the special radio host Bob Alexander who made this day such a successful and fun time.”

One of nine people will need to access local food bank services, said Moose 94.1 FM radio host Bob Alexander.

“Most of the senior citizens in the community are on fixed incomes and they pay for their rent and such,” he said. “That doesn’t leave room for food. This is what the food bank does. It helps. It helps children. If a child goes hungry, they’re in need.”

Every year, the Elliot Lake Emergency Food Bank spends an excess of $100,000 in food for the community. Donations of non-perishable food items, cash and toiletry items help keep it full.

The Elliot Lake Emergency Food Bank is located at 4 Charles Walk.
