Elliot Lake landfill closed 'until further notice', city says (Updated)

Flooding and concern for possible safety issues prompt closure

2:30 p.m. update

The Elliot Lake Landfill is closed because of flooding, says acting mayor Andrew Wannan.

"It's my understanding that there's a safety concern," Wannan said when reached for comment this afternoon.

"There's been some flooding and we're concerned about the direction of the leachate," he said. "We just don't want people driving through there right now."

Wannan said the city will update the public when more information becomes available.

The City of Elliot Lake says it is closing the municipal landfill facility immediately until further notice while it conducts an operational assessment.

Recycling containers outside the facility gate remain available for public use, but the landfill site itself is closed, the city said in a news release.

The city said it will advise when reopening of the facility can occur, and reminded residents that illegal dumping within the municipality and on crown land is an offence for which you can receive a fine.

The landfill is on Scott Road near the intersection of Esten Drive North and Pearson Drive.
