Elliot Lake’s newly formed Historical Society is hosting its first general meeting of the year featuring guest speaker Bill McMurray, who worked building the city’s early structures.

The meeting is planned for Wednesday, March 8 at 7 p.m. at the Mount Dufour ski chalet.

According to society vice-chairman Edo Ten Broek, McMurray’s ancestors originally moved to Canada from Ireland in the 1880s and settled in southern Ontario.

McMurray started in the lumber industry down south, became a carpenter and eventually moved to the Elliot Lake area to help build offices and structures for mines in the 50s and mid-60s.

He went back south to continue in the lumber industry, but returned to Elliot Lake three years ago. McMurray has lots of personal memories about his time here and at 87 has written a book about them.

The meeting will also involve an update of the group’s next steps, priorities and projects and information on the membership drive.

The public is welcome to attend and take part in discussions.
