A grant application for partial funding of a proposed cultural building at 255 King’s Hwy 108 has been denied by Infrastructure Canada. This is according to a memo to council from the Acting Director of Public Works, Bill Goulding, dated July 20, 2023. The memo is in the council’s agenda package for Monday evening’s council meeting.

The total project cost, as per the grant application, was estimated at $27,567,166. The amount sought from the GICB Program federal grant was $14,551,583.

The grant application detailed that, if successful, the City of Elliot Lake proposed to apply to other sources for funding including:

  • $2 million from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation
  • $1.5 million from local community fundraising and Elliot Lake Retirement Living Inc.
  • $2.5 million from City Reserves dedicated to this project

The grant application further advised the federal Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Program, “The corporation of the City of Elliot Lake carries very little long term debt and has a motivated Council and administration prepared to secure long term debt from Infrastructure Ontario (or the like) to finance the municipal portion of this important community capital project that will last for decades.”

This matter is scheduled to be discussed by the council in open session, Monday, July 24 at 7:00 p.m.

Citizens interested in addressing council during the Public Input Session must pre-register with the Municipal Clerk before noon on Monday.

Registered residents will be provided the opportunity to give a brief input at the beginning of the council meeting.

Council meetings are held at City Hall and are open to all residents. No registration is required to attend.
