Cubs slip past Red Wings in shootout

When the Greater Sudbury Cubs came calling at Centennial Arena Friday night, theElliot Lake Red Wings had high hopes for their first victory over the Cubs.

But the those hopes were dashed as the Cubs edged the Red Wings 2-1 in a shootout in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action.

After a scoreless opening period, Red Wings forward Brodie Kearns got the home team on the board first, beating Cubs netminder Joel Rainville at 6:53 of second period.

Cubs forward Ben Harris evened the score at one, beating Red Wings goaltender Cameron Smith at 14:30 of the second.

After the teams played through a scoreless third period and overtime frame, Cubs forward Billy Biedermann got the shootout winner.

The Cubs are now 21-13-3-0 on the season.

The Red Wings fall to 11-27-1-0 as the team remains in the hunt for a playoff spot.

Smith was busy in goal for the Red Wings, stopping 51 shots in the contest.

Rainville stopped 42 at the other end for the Cubs.

Other Friday night play saw the Powassan Voodoos dump the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 4-0, the Soo Thunderbirds smashed the Cochrane Crunch 6-1 and the Timmins Rock blanked Blind Rivers Beavers 10-0, while the French River Rapids topped the Espanola Express 3-2.

Up next for the Red Wings is a game on the road in Sudbury against the Cubs next Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.
