Elliot Lake city council appointed Couns. Charles Flintoff as Acting Mayor at the Monday evening council meeting, May 13.

The seat of acting mayor has been vacant since Feb. 12, when, then acting mayor Andrew Wannan, was appointed as mayor.

Elliot Lake’s procedural bylaw requires the appointment of an acting mayor.

“Council should pass a resolution this evening, to appoint a member from among you, as Acting Mayor, to act from time to time, in the mayor’s absence,” municipal clerk, Natalie Bray said.

Noting that Couns. Flintoff has already stepped into the role “a couple of times when I am not around,” Mayor Wannan put forward a motion to appoint Flintoff to the role.

It was moved and seconded by Councillors Norman Mann and Merrill Seidel.

Mann commented that “it has been past practice that those with the highest votes would fill those roles and I would be very happy to put forward Councillor Flintoff’s name and support that this evening.”

Flintoff thanked the councillors for the support. Smiling, he told the council that "the odd time when Mayor Wannan is out of town, hopefully, I don’t have to act too much.”

All members of council were present and the motion was supported unanimously.
