Over 40,000 metres of cracks in city streets will be filled this summer beginning around the middle of June.

Elliot Lake City Council decided Monday to hire Northern Contracting and Maintenance Ltd. of Sault Ste. Marie, to do patch work on city streets and at the airport at a cost of $86,800 plus taxes.

The company submitted the lowest tender of six for the work and has previously done similar work for the city.

The scope of work includes the provision of all labour, material and equipment necessary to provide crack sealing services for approximately 40,000 metres (30,000 metres at various streets and 10,000 metres at the airport), a report on the work stated.

“Asphalt crack sealing is essential for the maintenance of asphalt, as it helps to prevent larger maintenance projects and extends the life of the asphalt surface. Traditionally, the city engages in an annual crack sealing maintenance program,” the report states.

The work approved by council is expected to get underway by mid-June prior to cleaning and line painting.
