Less than three months after Elliot Lake's former chief building official, Bruce Ewald, resigned his post on Sept. 21, Elliot Lake City Council has approved the hiring of his replacement. At Monday night's first regular meeting of council's new four-year term, the city's seven councillors approved the hiring of Leo Chaloux.

Elliot Lake CAO Dan Gagnon told ElliotLakeToday, " Mr. Chaloux has spent several years in the municipal sector as a building and by-law official and in the private sector as a plans designer in the Sudbury area."

"Fluently bilingual, Mr. Chaloux is used to working in the North and is looking forward to new challenges as CBO in Elliot Lake,” he added.

The city's director of protective services John Thomas noted, "I am excited to work with Leo and impressed with his qualifications and experience. He is a welcome addition to the city and the community."

Chaloux's predecessor, Bruce Ewald, left Elliot Lake this fall to accept a similar position in Orangeville, Ont.

The chief building official ensures any new construction in Elliot Lake complies with the Ontario Building Code and other laws. In addition, the CBO also oversees enforcement of regulatory by-laws, including those monitored and enforced by the By-law Enforcement Officer. The CBO is also responsible for overseeing the property standards enforcement officer; the zoning by-law administrator (who is responsible for seeing that all new new construction complies with all building codes before building permits are issued); and the business licensing officer who issues business licenses for hawkers and pedlars, subject to the approval of the mayor and council and who also issues licenses for raffles, bingos and Nevada tickets. The CBO also oversees the building inspector who is responsible for providing building and plumbing inspections as well as by-law, property standards and zoning inspections along with the animal control supervisor.
