The ban on campfires and other outdoor burning across much of northeastern Ontario that has been in place since June 1 will end this afternoon, fire officials say.

“The restricted fire zone for Ontario’s fire region will be lifted July 11 at 4 p.m.,” the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s firefighting branch said in a Twitter post.

With what experts have called one of the worst forest fire seasons on record, the fire service still urged the public to “use extreme caution and follow outdoor fire regulations when having an outdoor fire”.

The service also thanked the public, whose summer camping and cottaging activities were impacted by the ban, for “doing your part to prevent forest fires”.

While fires persist across the province, on Monday night, 11 wildland fires were declared out.

“Thank you to our crews on the ground, in the sky, and behind the scenes for their dedication and hard work this fire season,” Ontario Forest Fires said in a separate Tweet.
