Playground more important than green space which is already plentiful, say advocates

About 53 neighbours of the Shirvon/Longview children’s playground in the Pronto West subdivision in Blind River oppose the removal of playground equipment from their neighbourhood.

A petition signed by the residents was presented to town council at its virtual meeting Monday evening.

“The residents of Pronto West subdivision strongly object to the playground equipment being dismantled and the area turned into green space,” the neighbours stated in their petition. “We have enough green space. Every home has green space, Berthelot park has green space, Sellers park has green space, the marina has green space.”

“What we don’t have are enough places for kids to play."

"Taking away this playground that has been there for 70 plus years is wrong on so many levels,” the petition stated.

The neighbours said council should leave the playground and instead add new equipment to make it better.

Council has instructed it CAO Katie Scott to prepare a report on the cost for equipment upgrades to the playground for its August meeting.
