Blind River Mayor Sally Hagman took the opportunity at the start of Monday evening’s council meeting to urge residents to assist with cleaning of debris in town as part of National Volunteer Week.

“April 16 – 22 is National Volunteer week and if you are not currently volunteering, you could start this Saturday, April 22 which is International Earth Day,” she said in her remarks.

“If everyone in our community participates by picking up a bag of garbage – you know that debris that can clearly be seen along our highway, parks and side streets – you would be providing a powerful service to making Blind River beautiful.”

“I’d like to acknowledge Tammy Stewart who has been picking up multiple bags of garbage across our community and along the highway,” the mayor added.

For all of you Earth Day “angels” as well as those who provide volunteer service, you are the power that tackles today’s greatest challenges, building a stronger community and a force that transforms the world, the mayor added.

The mayor also urged residents to sign up for the alert app now available at the town website.

“This is my final reminder to everyone to sign up for the Town Alerts. These alerts will come automatically to your phone,” she said.

“Once you have the app, not only will you be given notification for situations happening in the community, you could be a recipient of the $500 cash prize for signing on. The deadline to register for this prize is April 28. It’s easy, it’s informational and it’s our town’s way of keeping you in the loop.”
