Blind River Town Council has given the green to purchase new breathing equipment for the local fire department at a cost of $157,915 plus applicable taxes.

The equipment, according to Ryan Belair, Director of Protective Services, came in at the lowest of the three tenders received.

Belair said the breathing apparatus currently in use is set to expire in February 2024. He described the gear as archaic compared to recent advancements in firefighter safety.

“We are bringing forward a professional grade product, industry leader and for the lowest bid for your approval,” he told council. “We will also meet and achieve NFPA (national safety standards) compliance for years to come.”

The Scott X3 Pro is being bought through M & L Supply Fire & Safety for the air packs. It is also a product Belair has had field training with by Greater Sudbury Fire.

“Our fire staff had the opportunity to trial these breathing apparatus and they all agreed unanimously that the Scott X3 Pro is the route to take.”
