Blind River council is again looking to fill a vacancy in its ranks after Councillor Joe Connell resigned his seat due to health problems.

Council declared the seat vacant at its meeting Tuesday evening paving the way to fill the post either through appointment or a byelection.

Blind River has had some difficulty filling its seven council seats.

During the October municipal election last year, seats were filled by acclamation after the opening of the process failed to garner enough names for the seven seats. As a result, Mayor Sally Hagman was acclaimed as was deputy mayor Paula Summers along with councillors Betty Ann Dunbar, Jennifer Posteraro and Jim Dunbar. Connell was also acclaimed after there were six names to fill the seven member council roster.

Council then decided to again open the process up for people to put their names forward to fill the seventh seat.

As required by law, names were put forward and the candidates addressed council with their views on a council seat at an open meeting before council went into closed meeting to appoint the final councillor. Dan Middaugh was chosen to fill the final seat in December.

The appointment process is now set to take place again with the town requesting names of residents interested in sitting on council. The process will take 60 days.
