The latest COVID updates published by the province report nine new deaths, 1,282 new cases and approximately 1,000 COVID-positive patients in Ontario hospitals.

The nine deaths reported today have all occurred in the last month. The province has reported more than 450 COVID deaths that have occurred in February.

New case counts are underestimated as testing is not open to everyone.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 1,090,101 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic and reported 1,057,829 recoveries and 12,288 deaths.

The Feb. 22 updates provided by the province's public health agency and the ministry of health also reported the following data:

Cases

  • Nine new deaths
  • 1,997 recoveries since yesterday's report
  • Among the new cases confirmed today are 186 unvaccinated people, 28 partially vaccinated people, and 945 fully vaccinated people. 123 cases were reported with vaccination status unknown.
  • The seven-day average incidence rate for cases is 12.7 cases per 100,000 unvaccinated people, 10 cases per 100,000 partially vaccinated people, and 12 cases per 100,000 fully vaccinated people.

Hospitalizations

  • 1,038 people are in hospital testing positive for COVID-19.
  • There are approximately 319 patients in Ontario ICUs with COVID-related illnesses, and 274 patients in the ICU currently testing positive for COVID-19.
  • There are 202 COVID patients on ventilators because of COVID-related critical illness
  • Hospitalization counts are incomplete as not all hospitals report to the province's bed census on weekends and holidays. For the same reason, vaccination status of hospitalized patients was not updated.

Vaccination

  • About 85 per cent of the population over four years old in Ontario is fully vaccinated (about 11.9 million people)
  • More than 6.89 million people in Ontario have had three doses of a COVID vaccine.
  • 10 per cent of the eligible population (aged 5 and up) is unvaccinated

Testing

  • Provincial labs processed 15,365 tests yesterday resulting in a 6.9 per cent positivity rate. There are 4,483 tests still being processed.

Northern Ontario

In the north, there are 128 people with COVID-19 in hospital, up from 127 yesterday, according to provincial data. There are 26 people in ICU with the virus, up from 23 yesterday, and 15 people on ventilators, which is the same as yesterday.

Not all health units update their websites over the weekend and the data for Northern Ontario health units is not up-to-date yet.
